How to use

Markup vs margin

➕Markup

The percentage you add to cost. Cost 400, 50% markup: price 600.

➗Margin

The share of the price that is profit. Price 600, profit 200: margin 33%.

⚠️The trap

50% markup ≠ 50% margin. Mix them up and you count profit that isn’t there.

What else to include in the price

  • Shipping and returns: free shipping isn’t free for you.
  • Bank and card fees: usually 1–3% of the order.
  • Advertising: what it costs to win one buyer.
  • Discounts and promo codes: build them into the price. Generate codes here.

How to price a product in an online store

The most common beginner mistake is to price at “cost plus 30%” and think that’s 30% profit. That difference still has to pay for ads, shipping, bank fees, packaging and returns. Work out what it costs to sell one item first, then choose your markup.

A starting benchmark: a margin under 20% leaves almost nothing for advertising. 30–50% is a healthy range for most products. Accessories, cosmetics and own-brand goods often go above 50%.

Another way to earn more from the same buyer is upselling. When a customer asks in chat about a phone case, suggest a screen protector too. With Talkoly, the chat shows similar products from your catalogue while the shopper waits for a reply. See upselling in chat.
